Released in January of 1999, three years after the Japanese version, the Base Set contains 102 cards. The first set “Unlimited” cards were released Later that year. The unlimited version is a bit brighter, with depth added by shadow around the image. The Base set features the illustrations of Ken Sugimori, Mitsuhire Arita, Keiji Kinebuchi, and Tomoaki Imakuni.

In early 2000, Wizards of the Coast released Base Set 2, combining the original 102 cards plus 28 from the Jungle Set. The set features illustration by Ken Sugimori, Mitsuhire Arita, Keiji Kinebuchi, and Tomoaki Imakuni from the original set and Kagemaru Himeno from the Jungle Set. Base Set “1st Edition” is marked by ‘1st Edition’ logo under the bottom left corner of the image. Pokéball on a 2 just under the right corner of the image marked Base Set 2 cards.

On October 10th 1999, Fossil, the third expansion of Pokemon Cards was released. The Fossil Set contained only 62 cards. The set is focused on the first known Pokémon™® from 2,000,000 years ago. The deck features illustrators Ken Sugimori, Mitsuhiro Arita, and Kagemaru Himeno.
